**Important Notice**
MKV 4:4:4 version requires high performance CPU for decoding. (probably at least 8 cores, e.g. Ryzen R7)
MP4 4:2:0 version can be H/W decoded with supported devices. (confirmed compatible on GTX960 and RX480)
However, for those who are using madVR, note that 4:2:0 stresses GPU more since chroma upscaling is required.

Better do a downscale comparison, specially from UHD, since upscale always alters a bit more the picture. Maybe I'm gonna do some more comparisons when UHD and 1080p sources will both be available.
Did they scale that screenshot comp in GIMP?? That ringing! At least use madVR with Jinc, if not NNEDI3 or NGU. The 4k is still better, but NNEDI3 does a MUCH better job than what they used.
If you have a 4k monitor you probably want to pick this up.

As for present screenshots, they do look pretty like a TrueUHD stuff. Any upscale won't give such a level of details that is well visible from comparisons.

It's an upscale. Start tweaking madVR (NNEDI3 256 neurons with enhancements) and you can get it 95% there. Don't go by that screenshot comp since that does NOT show a proper upscale of 1080. That's mpv/VLC-tier.

Just use mpv then. Works fine. Just use a chroma upscaler that still looks good and is GPU harmless (bicubic for example). Luma matters much more, you don't have to use overkill stuff like nnedi3 on chroma.

It's certainly due to a higher amount of bitrate and the fact that, maybe, some scenes were indeed produced/rendered in a higher definition than 1080p.

There's no added detail there. In fact there's more in the BDRip since LittleBakas filtered the 4k. You're confusing the ringing from the terrible upscale with loss in the source.

It just looks like a classic upscale by QTEC to me. It doesn't look that terrible on upscaled 1080p material, I guess.
But you still see some lineart smearing. It's clearly doesn't look like native 4k.
But I still would recommend it over the 1080p version (the non-yuv444 one). Even with nnedi3 (256 neurons) you can't get something as sharp as this. Maybe they used a sharpening filter as well here, no idea. I haven't seen the lossless 4k version.
Even with the most sophisticated filter you can't invent detail that wasn't here from the beginning. You can upscale a picture, fake detail, alter detail, but definitely not invent detail.
I'm not talking about the overall clearness of the pictures on the UHD screens (mostly due to the sharp), I'm talking about the small details you can see by putting your nose in front of your monitor.
I'm no expert, and I'm maybe wrong, but as far as I know, it would be very difficult to get this result by simply filtering from a 1080p source. If this is the case, it's by far the most incredible purest upscale I've ever seen in my humble amateur life.
This is a very high quality upscale, but it's still an upscale. Worth it if you have a 4k monitor since the BD source is not lossless and would take tons of processing to get it close, but you're not missing anything watching it in 1080.
Imho, UHD version has details that weren't even present on the 1080p version so it's clearly **not only** a simple upscale (see com #30). Anyway, UHD seems worth to be used for futures rips (not only UHD rips).
Adrenaline, the question is whether those details are "faked" (via QTEC or some other means). Obviously it looks sharper but that is not the end of the story.
i just watched it on 4k TV and it's amazing. definitely better than the original 1080p Blu ray. more details, better colors. But it's not HDR so i don't know if it's from 4k BD or not. still amazing quality
Keep in mind that the uhd blu ray is HDR with rec 709, not dci/p3/bt2020. It was also mastered at 300 nits brightness. Some one linked an article on a forum giving some interesting details on the process of grading and doing the 4K version.
@able1214 the wording is definitely a bit strange as it appears they put bt709 color into a bt2020 container...weird. Thanks for the link though as I am definitely wrong.
how are you guys playing this? I got this into an USB pen, pluged it into a Samsung UE55KS8000 (american model is KS9000), and the TV won't play it... This TV is Samsung's 4K top tier from last year, it's supposed to be able to read it.
any advices?
warning: people with Mac computers, or intent to copy to an external and play on TV should download 4:2:0 version since Mac & smart tvs can't decode this 4:4:4 atm

Most of the best Anime encoders like Adrenaline and Yurasyk agree that this encode is the most incredible and neat upscaling they have ever seen. So believe your eye, and it is really the best encode of Your Name.
On the contrary ROOKIEs who know little about srcipts and encoding say this is not good. They can’t even de-interlace properly. I believe they are blind, or more probobly arrogant and jealous. Look up and you know who I‘m talking about. Ridiculous.
If the video is upscaled, it's done in RGB and converted to YUV444, in which LB fixes chroma artifacts. Or it's a record(RGB or YUV444) of 4K BD. To avoid loss of subsampling, YUV444 makes sense. Nothing strange for experienced encoders at all.

You can do the same job with sharpenresize filter in aviutl.

In addition,littlebaka is poorly encoding.
I see some jaggy.
Too much radius means too much sharp(jaggy).
Use Mosquito noise reduction filter to reduce jaggy.
To elaborate on the process used for the 4K edition of Kimi no Na wa:
The film itself was supplied as a DPX 1920x1080/4:4:4/10bit/BT.709 file to the mastering house (Qtec). The use of DPX rather than HDCAM-SR was made to minimize compression and maximize detail. This raw was directly encoded for the standard Blu-ray release and was downscaled for the DVD release, meaning no additional processing work was done by the mastering house.
The 4K UHD Blu-ray is based on an upscale of the DPX 1080p file but it is not a just an upscale. Firstly, Qtec used their proprietary up-conversion technology, which is probably not noticeably better than what could be achieved by an experienced up-converter using generic equipment but presumably is done with a bit more experience in animation upscaling. But Qtec was working with an uncompressed video when they started their up-conversion, which is an inherently better starting point than the compressed 1080p BD file that was released for retail. So while the 4K upscale might not have any additional detail beyond the 1080p DPX file, it *does* have a bit of extra sharpness over the 1080p BD file, which presumably lost some in the encoding process.
Secondly, Shinkai's own animation (and thus the DPX file) was not made in HDR and was capped at the standard 100 nit brightness for SDR files. In fact, Qtec had to ask Shinkai for permission to add HDR for the 4K UHD release. This is the real difference because no amount of filtering in the 1080p file will add the additional brightness, which was added by Qtec scene by scene and then run by Shinkai for approval. The 4K UHD release still uses the same color space as the 1080p release, but with a much greater brightness range, up to 777 nits in the brightest scene.
Thus, there *is* value in the actual 4K UHD release, but only if you have an HDR screen that can handle the additional brightness and contrast. If you have a 4K screen with a standard brightness range, you would not likely see much difference at all if you have good filters. Even then, for those that care, the 4K UHD BD release is still the "Shinkai approved" upscale, the one he approved as being the closest to his original work.
Please help me understand, why is this version the sharpest, native 4k looking out there? is it because of this weird on demand encoding thing gonig on? It blows my CPU but comparing to a 50gb rip i saw this still looks so much cleaner, sharper. I hope someone can help me understand these things.
Bruh. Seriously after reading this... This was a stupid argument. I could care less about 4K despite having a 4K TV, and monitor. 1080p is the best for this. Rather have 1080p, then an upscale regardless. People saying using 4:4:4 makes sense. Nice meme. A chroma upscale should never be done with a 1080p source, or a UHD source for that matter.
