There's lanczos-like ringing in first screenshot, very visible at the bottom of the vertical lines above the nose. Is your rescale wrong?

If you're going to bother uploading to slowpics, why do a screenshot gallery and not a comparison with the source(s) encoded from? To be honest, screenshots on their own like this are mostly useless. Also I'm not sure what you're calling "dither" here. It seems like there was other filtering done like debanding. Are you talking about regraining?

https://slow.pics/c/KDy1fyrg So you sneedsplitted EMBER with an incorrect rescale (adds ringing, looks like anti-aliasing, does not restore detail and does not improve clarity) and applied debanding; somehow got all of this into a super bloated `crf=8` video. You also nuked all the grain. Waste of disk space. A BD remux with player-provided debanding would have better video, less compatibility issues with TVs and would have saved you plenty of electricity/bandwidth.
