Funimation's first foray into the Dragon Ball dubbing world came in 1994 when they produced an English-language version of The Legend of Shenlong, entitled Curse of the Blood Rubie *(sic)*. This initial recording maintained the naming conventions established in Harmony Gold's take on the series; Goku became Zero, Bulma became Leena, and Yamcha became Zedaki. Unfortunately, [in a devastating story of shipping woes](https://www.kanzenshuu.com/features/different-missing-link-from-zero-to-goku-again/), it's not likely this version will ever appear in quality higher than its [current capture](https://archive.org/details/dragon-ball-curse-of-the-blood-rubies-blt-1994-beta-test-dub-lq-rip). However, its 1995 version - the very same dub with the original Japanese names partially restored, with its titular "Rubie" becoming "Rubies" - has been recovered and captured in Dolby Stereo.
Unfortunately, both versions of the movie are heavily edited with scenes removed and sped-up, with its 1995 version famously splicing in the Dragon Ball TV anime's second episode partway through the film. As a result, its inclusion in previous multi-audio uncut Blu-ray encodes has meant that it was cut together with other dubs with its episode 2 section removed, so as to ensure it could be synced. This release remedies this by recreating the majority of the original edits to the video and maintaining the audio almost exactly as it was originally presented. This includes title cards, credits, episode 2 integration, and cut speeds. The only authentic omissions are its shortened opening, a custom scene transition, and a small instance of visual censorship. As they contain custom graphics, attempting to remake them as a fan would have resulted in a look just as inauthentic as omitting them.

As this version of movie was originally released in a 4:3 aspect ratio with a TV episode spliced in, the Zima Entertainment master and AB Groupe's recent TV series upscale were used to ensure visual parity. The latter was levelled and regrained to help achieve a smooth transition between sources. Title fonts were identified as Humanst521 and Gill Sans MT, and were typeset precisely. Lastly, the audio capture of the dub was delicately noise treated, with distortions fixed in areas that were non-destructive. The results are a near-authentic HD recreation of the movie that can now be enjoyed in its entirety.
