For original release notes please see [here.](https://pastebin.com/06cda9a5) ### Video | Episodes | Source | Resolution | PAR | DAR | Scan Type | FPS | Format | Encoder | Media Info | |:------------:|:--------------:|:----------:|:-------:|:----:|:-----------:|:-----:|:------:|:-------:|:----------:| | 1-153, SP1-2 | R2J Dragon Box | 708x480 | 177:160 | 4:3 | Progressive |23.976 | H.264 | JySzE |[MI Link](https://pastebin.com/mTDSNELS) **Notes:** 1. Video has been completely re-encoded with additional quality upgrades over v2, utilizing techniques developed for our GT and Z Merge releases. Fixes to the Dragon Box video include IVTC, decimation, PAR correction, chromatic aberration reduction, chroma noise reduction, chroma placement adjustment, and blocking treatment/grain retention. You can read more about what this means in the [merge PDF](https://dombito.github.io/mergeproject/R1R2.pdf). Note that this time the two specials have also been encoded with the above fixes. 2. No color correction has been done. It's still in the planning stages, so please don't ask about it. Broadcast Audio has been upgraded to use Team Mirolo's recent [BA update](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1422188). While the sources for the BA are the same, Mirolo applied additional filtering to remove hiss without sacrificing quality. Episode 153 and the NEP for 152 come from a newer more recent source. 2. The FUNi "Remastered" dub is unchanged from the previous release, including the re-inserted insert songs. 3. Episodes 2 and 3 of the BLT dub were updated with audio fixes, the rest remain the same. 4. All Harmony Gold episodes were updated to use the newer audio used by Tom_Servo in their [Harmony Gold restoration](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1314299). 5. A previous issue where the DBOX track was labeled as "English" for episodes 14-153 has been corrected. ### Subtitles | Episodes | Style | Format | Timings | Styler |:--------:|:-------------------------------------------------------:|:------:|:-----:|:-----:| | 1-153, SP1-2 | Stylized OP/ED, OP Credits, Titles, Signs, and Dialogue | ASS | corre | corre / iKaos | 1-153 | Stylized OP Credits, Titles, Signs, Inserts, and NEPs | ASS | corre | corre / iKaos | 1-153, SP1-2 | Basic Subtitles | SRT | Isaac / iKaos | iKaos | 1-153 | English Dubtitles | ASS | OnionEclipse | mgold0704 *All subs originally OCRed by Krycek7o2. NEPs for 31-71 originally done by Krycek7o2. OP and ED styling assistance from Scoped and AnimeAjay. OP credits timed and stylized by dubudavid. Names and romanization contributions from AnimeAjay, dubudavid, professorwho, Herms, Jonhster, and SaiyaJedi. Timings contributed by Team Mirolo. Signs originally created by Evoshare and modified by moi15moi and corre.* **Notes:** 1. Name changes and spelling adjustments have been made to be more inline with our choices made starting in DBGT. These will be ported over to any future DBZ release as well. Some changes were made for consistency across all versions of subtitles (previous release had many differences between stylized and basic subs). 2. All OP/ED stylings have been updated for consistency with our other releases (romanized lyrics on top, English translations on bottom). Romaji were removed from the EDs due to them overlapping credits. 3. OP Credits have been added to the Signs/Titles track. 4. Stylings have been simplified and improved across all subs tracks. New signs have been upgraded for most episodes. All SFX now have proper stylings. 5. Dubtitles have been added for the English FUNi dub, with stylings that match our GT release. 6. Basic subtitles are now in SRT format for compatibility. ### Extras All extras are ported over from our previous release. Aside from name changes to some files, the only differences are the Japanese short previews and trailers, which have had their audio updated where applicable with Team Mirolo's new filtered audio. Subtitles have also been adjusted for consistency. Thanks to dubudavid for updated translations. ### Thanks In addition to the people who worked on our initial release, additional thanks to JySzE, Team Mirolo, dubudavid, corre, Johnster, Romao, vanner64, Tom_Servo, ZeroCool, csmaniac33, Ghosty6464, and Krycek7o2. This is the Based Department, calling to notify you we are impressed with your work.
at last cant wait for v5!11!1! but in reality very cool release
Excellent work as always SoM!
Thank you everyone! ![Well, let's go for some more...!](https://files.catbox.moe/6b2zni.webp)
This just is the best Classic Dragon Ball torrent. It has the best video source used and fixed, best audio source used and fixed and last but not least the subs are incredibly well done. Thanks to everyone who made this a reality!
I guess you are free now to share an encode with lesser size of your DBZ merge project . Keep up the good work ! .
@The-good_Man1994 I believe he will do that after the movies are released
where is me Cyborgs
Thank you guys for all the committed and insane amount of work to bring us the highest quality version of this show! A near 15 year trip finally closing here!
over 2GB per ep? Total MADNESS ! Let's hope some1 does a HEVC of this.

Any plans for Dragon Ball Super??
@TheDevilsHyper There are already many good releases of that garbage out there . Both encodes and untouched ones . By The Way, the word "garbage" is more suitable for/ to Dragon Ball KAI ^_^ .
The Dragon Box is still the best restoration of DBZ. It is much better than any of FUNi's DNR'd remasters or DBZ Kai. Watching the Dragon Box on a CRT has more soul than watching Kai on a 1080p LCD monitor. Anyways, I hope you unban me on Discord (Hydra Spectre). I swear I will post more relevant topics when I get back. Also, what is the cutoff for what you consider classic Dragon Ball? I think it is anything before Kai.
I actually like Modern Dragon Ball but SoM doesn't need to do the modern ones because there are already too many good releases of the modern content. SoM just has to unite to bring forth the ultimate versions of the Classic Era because it has not been preserved well in one place, we have the following issues: - Inferior audio on the Japanese Dragon Box DVDs not sourced from the original broadcasts - Exclusive fixes albeit overall worse quality in the US Dragon Box DVDs - Heavily DNR'd FUNimation screw-ups on DVD and Blu-ray that are cropped - No HD releases of OG Dragon Ball and GT, DNR'd or otherwise - Multiple assorted dubs of varying quality that have spotty preservation to the point that some of them have become lost - At least two different presentations of each classic Dragon Ball movie: a domestic theatrical release that is cropped to 16:9/1.85:1 and an international open matte release opened up to the full 4:3 image of the negative. The 16:9 presentations are now the only releases most people can find and the open matte releases, despite showing more image ala IMAX, are getting harder to find in a good quality Classic Dragon Ball (OG/Z/GT) may be a well-revered classic, but it is one work of art that has not been preserved well officially, so Seed of Might is doing their best to preserve classic Dragon Ball at the highest quality. Feel free to go to other sources if you want modern Dragon Ball since at least it has been treated much more kindly, at least for now.
@PeePeePooPoo69 You mean the Quran dub? I am looking for the lost Mexi-Sushi dubs, in both Tagalog and English. As well as the Tiananmen English dub. The joke is that the Philippines is an Asian (sushi) country with a lot of Spanish (Mexico) influence thanks to being a former Spanish colony. And the Mexi-Sushi thing is a joke from the Postal games. The Filipino English and Tagalog dubs were made by Creative Products Corporation. Tiananmen is because the Animax dub was made in Hong Kong, and Free Hong Kong is one of the trigger phrases of Chinese censorship alongside the Tiananmen Square. I can joke about this because I am Asian, Filipino-Chinese to be exact.

@HARVEST I don't really think you're making a good case for yourself being unbanned for going "off topic" when you have to split your post into 3 comments just for it to fit. Here's how I would have handled it: @TheDevilsHyper No. The rest of these comments are memes, this fanbase is cursed af
@iKaos/SOM appreciate the work fam Thanks guys!!!
Thanks for the fixes, and giving me credit!
what was the "very slight adjustment to the OP for episodes 47-153"?
Nevermind the little issues, thanks for the release ;) Tremendous work !
I'm very sorry for my behaviour. Anyways, I have a special idea in restoring the movies that I unfortunately cannot do myself.
For any curious concerning the improvements in video from the new encode, here's a quick comparison vs. the previous release: https://slow.pics/c/1HpN4BzG The improvements in deblocking especially throughout darker zones such as Launch's hair and mosquito noise surrounding outlines is readily apparent, and without any real hits to fine detail thanks to excellent grain management/compensation. Also chroma channels are also slightly improved manifesting most notably in cleaner reds such as the border of Piccolo Daimao's crest. This is in addition to incorporating the updated BA tracks (no more background buzz/hiss, yay!) and sign TS work. Thanks to iKaos, JySzE, and all other team members for their hard work.
@Kuraze im glad you like it Kuraze! :)
Anyways, my pitch idea is for 1920x1440p open matte 4:3 Ultimate Editions of the classic Dragon Ball movies with the US 4:3 movie DVDs (or maybe the French PAL DVDs) AI upscaled to 1920x1440p and AutoOverlay, regraining and colour-correcting them to be closer to the Amazon Prime remasters and overlaying the Amazon Prime remasters on top of them seamlessly to create the best of both worlds version: The clarity of the Japanese Amazon Prime remasters but with the expanded aspect ratio of the International DVD releases.
@HARVEST Listen that ain't happening from us, I'm not trying to be rude but you need to stop. Overlaying sources of that many quality differences with AI or without AI is just a BAD idea and will result in a ugly bastard child release that shouldn't exist. Please go find someone else to help you and don't even bother trying to change our minds on this, we are NOT interested.
I’ll stop trying to convince you all. I just want to help. That said, for the movies, I would still love the open matte 4:3 presentation on a CRT. I just wanted to help. I am very sorry. But I think I work better as a general observer and a feedback source. I tried compressing episodes to HEVC for people with limited storage like me but I couldn’t get satisfactory results.

iKaos (uploader)

User
Your 4:3 SD movies are here https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1271049, if you want some more audio choices for them then you can check this folder. `aHR0cHM6Ly9tZWdhLm56L2ZvbGRlci9iNEFualFTSiNyMFZCY3hVdm9XYzVGdE5BVy1NOFFR` You won't ever get anything better than this. Even people within SoM who prefer the movies in 4:3 can't get them to look much better without destroying what little detail there is in the source. If you're talking about watching on a CRT, what would even be the point of upscaling them to 1080p?
I was thinking of the AI upscaling for people with no CRTs. However, I just really want to help and I am very sorry for pushing this bad idea too much. I really do hope that SoM can make properly deinterlaced encodes of the 4:3 SD movies with as many audio tracks as possible and the best subtitles. They would be a great alternative option to the 16:9 1080p versions. I really wanted something to contribute to SoM and I thought HEVC-compressed versions would be good but I thought it removed the grain a bit. I am still not sure if people would like my HEVC compressed versions but I am thinking a lot of people want something smaller than 2GB per episode, even with the removal of grain. I really wish I can post this version under the SoM moniker but this may still take me a while, especially since I have limited space myself. My ultimate passion project would be to sync the Westwood/Blue Water/AB Groupe dubs to these uncut R2J Dragon Boxes but it is something I have to train for in audio editing and synching, which I have little to no experience on. I figured if no one else would do it, then I would want to do it even if it is very hard. I also have limited time because I keep losing focus and I am still on college. Lastly, I would also love to give some smaller feedback on the Discord on some fixes. Namely, suggesting on converting all basic subs for previous releases to SRT instead of ASS and using the Caballar font for the Dubtitle OPs just like in the Full Subtitle OPs. Anyways, how do I access the folder you gave me? Thanks for this, though.

iKaos (uploader)

User
The folder is accessible if you put the string into a base64 decoder, just google it. Easiest solution for deinterlacing is playing back the videos with MPV and using the deinterlace option, boom problem solved. HEVC is a bad idea for anything that is grainy, unless you wipe away all the grain, which will be time consuming and will also kill detail. I will one day do some kind of smaller encode but it's at the bottom of my to-do list. People keep wanting the Canada/UK dubs synced to R2J but I don't think they realize that it's not an uncut dub. In the three years since I've started these projects I've had no less than four people offer to do it and none of them have gotten past one episode. Best you're gonna get for now is the Westwood syncs done by SoM. Both DB and GT have SRT instead of ASS subs now for basic subs, so obviously when we do Z it'll be the same. All of our OPs use the same font (Faxfont for text, Funimitation for dialogue), and none of them use Caballar (which is our sign font), so not sure what you're asking there. Honestly none of this stuff is worth not focusing on college for so you should just stick to that.
Yeah. Now that I really think about it, I just wanna be on the Discord as a general observer, sometimes giving suggestions and input based on what I want. The Canada/UK dubs synced to R2J would have the gaps filled in with the FUNimation remastered dub, as usual, but it would take a tedious amount of time and it would be harder doing it for hundreds of episodes as opposed to the somewhat short-lived Rock the Dragon dub. What I meant for the font in the Dubtitle OPs is for it to use whatever the same font the Japanese OP song lyrics use. I still have more important matters and I think that's okay. If I cannot contribute anything, I can just be a general fan, follower and observer keeping up via. notifications on Discord.
Smaller encode of Z merge is at the bottom of your to-do list, huh? Well does that mean you still have some valuable projects to release ? What are they exactly? Only the Movies and Specials? Well, good luck in that, my fellow fan .
@The-good_Man1994 Just join the Q&A discord server bro, you're welcome to join in, plus all the info you seek is there and explained in detail. https://discord.gg/5HuFcx5msE
Nice work! Keep it up! Now it would be great to have other classic shows with similar treatment like this. For example Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters has no decent release (Japanese DVD with strange contrast/gamma) which could satisfy me but they still released a cropped *Remaster*. Ridiculous. As if these hideous censors were not annoying enough...
@HnK19 Crunchyroll ًWEB_DLs present on AB are the best way to go . And to my knowledge, their aspect ratio is 4:3 which means they do not have any cropping . I just downloaded them and didn't have time to get around them just yet .
@HARVEST ![alt text](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EklOCwKXIAAEiwX.jpg)
https://slow.pics/c/1HpN4BzG Loving the fixes, but I think I prefer v2's overall look more. The increased deblocking is removing some grain and small details (eg. Piccolo's wrist band wrinkles in #5, the fine lines in the brow area on #6). Coupled with what seems like increased dehaloing, it almost gives it a DNRed look comparatively (#5 looks the most guilty of it). Generally when I have high deblocking, I'll GrainFactory3 in some grain to match the pre-deblocked look
@poeBear Yeah, so fixes will always have advantages and disadvantages over other versions. About GrainFactory3, we're already doing something better and less artificial than that. The problem is that adding grain to the same intesity as the original macroblocked grain will sometimes make things more visually destructive, even applying it only to flat areas. The intensity here is always bounded to a safe level. If you like v2 better, that's totally ok also. Enjoy! 👍
I'm not sure if it's a Team Mirolo issue/fix, but I'm sure the opening audio for episode 109(and other episodes) is from Broadcast Audio, and not the Dragon Box, as indicated in the torrent (from Team Mirolo) PD: > Made a very slight adjustment to the OP for episodes 47-153, likely unnoticeable by most people. Oh, I see. Thank you for all your work with the original series!
VOSTFR pitié!
@iKaos ❤️ Thank you so much !
Thanks for doing the Dragon Ball series, I can't wait to watch. I was wondering how you added the Japanese NEP to the English dub? As in which software, and if it was a lossy or lossless process. Also for the "Unmodified English Tracks" episodes 87, 95, and 130 are the wrong episodes. The ones you included are for episode 88, 96, and 131 instead. I was hoping you could upload the proper ones?

iKaos (uploader)

User
@Hugo2003DBZ Episodes 48+ contain a different variation on the OP that comes from the BD OP of Movie 2, something that was done to correct an issue with the DBOX OPs as pointed out to us by Kei. @Idle You are indeed correct, and somehow no one noticed that our old release also had the wrong tracks despite it being out for over a year before this revision. I re-compiled the 3 tracks and added them to a fix folder: `aHR0cHM6Ly9tZWdhLm56L2ZvbGRlci8yZGtrQ0xvSiNFRGdJZXY3bUVtaWxuVTJiMDFjRVJR` With regards to adding the NEPs, it was all done losslessly using sox and ffmpeg. Sox was used to grab the NEPs from the BA and attach them to the English tracks, and ffmpeg was used to convert the FLAC NEP to ac3 and upsample it properly to match the 5.1 audio of the English track. This was done with batch commands instead of track by track.
Thanks for the proper episode tracks. I do prefer the modified tracks, especially the ones with the song "Mezase Tenka-ichi" but its nice being able to compare how Funimation had changed things. And also thanks for the explanation on how the NEP were added, very informative. Thanks again for the release.
"Color correction is still in the planning stages" -- What colors need to be "corrected", exactly? I haven't watched the whole series but the thing looks right to me.
@Jisp He said it's in the planning stages and not to ask about it, so he's probably not gonna answer. My guess is that they are going to fix it so much that they end up fucking it up like when you're trying to get the shape of your pubes just right.
big thanks. you're awesome, guys! changing my v2 right now.
all i need is jp bc audio, why all these audio tracks? it makes the file much larger:(

@Fukanzenta3CeLL Vast majority of episodes only have one English dub track, the dubs total 15GB out of a 369GB torrent. You can always uske MKVToolNix to take the tracks you don't want out.
@iKaos, then i wouldn't be able to seed your marvelous work:( I'm interested in Harmony Gold Dub anyways, there's even Turkish dub for this: some episodes are online if anybody is interested (perhaps Turkish fellas). Also please do movies too (both DB, DBZ and GT) I'd appreciate even more if you could also do the specials such as A Hero's Legacy, Episode of Bardock Ossu Kaette Kitta, and DBZ TV Specials. If these ain't in your scope thanks for your marvelous works either way:)
@Fukanzenta3CeLL Check his uploads, there's Z and GT available, while the movies are being worked on to be released sometime in early 2022. Specials are included with the various shows they were a part of, so Bardock and Trunks with Z, and Hero's Legacy with GT. Episode of Bardock and Yo! Son Goku are modern Dragon Ball and aren't going to be released by SoM.
Why high@L3 as format profile instead of [email protected]?
Selecta Vision should take notes.
@George15 Speaking of which, I bet their release would be better than this fan project . And yes I know it's an upscale with filters .
@The-good_Man1994 Selecta manages to look worse than the nearly 20 year old DBox rips https://slow.pics/c/MWw784ls
@BlasterChief can i know what released is from ur picture tagged with "cel" ? look nice like it was better than dbox and selecta vision
@kirajahanam The image labeled "cel" is a scan of the original animation cel. It's not from any release, it's just there to show what that particular shot's colors looked like originally, and what it should look like assuming the series were properly restored.
How the hell is this so bloated?
@Golden_Chimera It is "bloated" because it seeks to keep as much detail as possible and such detail requires large file sizes.
@Golden_Chimera if this release is to bloated for you maybe youd prefer mine https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1281700
Thanks, also good lord the comments in DB torrents are always cursed as fuck.

Can someone please upload the full Subs of this to kitsunekko or some other site? Thanks
I wish this was released with the single DVDs dub.
I was wondering, would be okay, if I used this release to recreate the german dub of Dragon Ball in higher quality? I would really appreciate it!

@Kaitotaku no problem, but I recommend you join the Discord listed in the description as I know there are several German fans working on some kind of sync and I'd hate for you to duplicate your work.
How about doing v5 with color correction?
Bitrate seems waaaaay too high for 708x480 animation.
Easy! Don't watch it on your Chinese knock-off phone.

@zetsu_shoren I don't care about the other release one way or another but please learn to take proper screenshots, the ones you took make our release look way blurrier than it actually does: https://imgur.com/a/LX0ZUPS
WE NOW HAVE A CREDITLESS OP2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFmJKjUSam4
Can somebody upload this to Google Drive pretty please? There's not enough seed, my download is at 2.2 KiB/s (if anybody seed would be great too)
